CD8a is a single-pass type I integral membrane protein with one Ig-like V-type domain (aa 22-135) that plays an essential role in the immune response and serves multiple functions in responses against both external and internal offenses. CD8a is produced with a 21-amino acid signal peptide that is subsequently cleaved to produce the mature form. CD8 is generally present as a heterodimer of alpha and beta chains linked by two disulfide bonds, however, it can also form homodimers.
