Retinal dehydrogenase 1 is a ubiquitously distributed cytosolic enzyme that serves as a detoxification enzyme and generates retinoic acid. It catalyzes the oxidation of retinal to retinoic acid that is essential for differentiation, development, and survival of dopaminergic neurons.
