This process is necessary for the regulation of protein transport in eukaryotic cells. It also functions as a scaffolding protein and interacts with various proteins in other compartments of the cell. Knock-down of BIG1 and BIG2, a closely related guanine-nucleotide exchange factor, results in disruption of localization of certain proteins associated with the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and recycling endosomes.
