The bottom paper liner protects the adhesive layer, and the top carrier sheet protects the outer surface of the highly compliant membrane until it has been placed and adhered to the plate. The liners also assure sterility of each individual membrane. The adhesive seals every well (unlike molded plastic covers), permitting agitation without cross-contamination or microbial infiltration.
