Description General description A low molecular weight non-glycosylated basic protein of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors that is freely filtered by the glomerular membrane. Serum levels of cystatin C can be used as a specific and sensitive marker of glomerular filtration rate. Protects organisms against undesirable proteolysis by endogenous or exogenous enzymes. Rapidly and tightly inhibits papain (Ki = 0.26 nM) and cathepsin B (Ki = 4.4 nM). Thought to be linked to many disease processes including Alzheimer′s Disease, hereditary cerebral hemorrhage and lung cancer.
