It is mainly expressed in the steroidogenic glands (ovary, testis, adrenal cortex and placenta). EG-VEGF is a small, secreted peptide and works as a tissue-specific pro-angiogenic mitogen and chemotactic agent. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 1p13._x000D_ Biochem/physiol Actions_x000D_ Endocrine gland-derived vascular endothelial growth factor (EG-VEGF) is involved in angiogenesis, inflammatory responses and hematopoiesis. It also participates in female reproduction. EG-VEGF suppresses trophoblast invasion in pregnancy. Changes in the activity of this protein are associated with gestational complication, such as gestational trophoblastic diseases, repeated pregnancy losses, preeclampsia and intrauterine fetal growth restriction. EG-VEGF interacts with G protein-coupled receptors, prokineticin receptor 1 (PKR1) and prokineticin receptor 2 (PKR2).
