Description_x000D_ General description_x000D_ IL15 (interleukin 15) protein is a short-chain α-helical bundle type 1 T cell-stimulating cytokine. It is a pleiotropic cytokine belonging to the cytokine receptor γ chain family, and is expressed by dendritic cells (DCs), epithelial cells, macrophages, monocytes, and fibroblasts. IL15, along with its receptor IL15Rα, are co-expressed majorly by activated monocytes and DCs (dendritic cells). Recombinant mouse IL-15 is a 13.3 kDa protein containing 115 amino acid residues._x000D_ Biochem/physiol Actions_x000D_ IL15 (interleukin 15) and IL2 are the only two known cytokine till date that bind to T-cells through IL-2Rβ (IL2 receptorβ). It interacts with lymphocytes via the heterotrimeric IL-15 receptor (IL-15R) composed of IL-15Rα, IL-2 receptor beta (IL-2Rβ), and IL-2 receptor gamma (IL-2Rγ). Since, IL-2R and IL-15R have common subunits, it is supposed that IL2 and IL15 perform similar functions, such as induction of lymphocyte activation and proliferation in vitro, and apoptosis of activated lymphocytes (AICD).
