TIMP2 also regulates cell growth and migration. Mutations in TIMP genes results in several pathological conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, acute kidney injury, neurodegenerative processes and extension of myocardial infarction. TIMP2 exhibits antitumorigenic, antimetastatic and antiangiogenic actions. Decreased TIMP levels are observed in many cancers and it is known to prevent tumor metastasis.
